Remembering numbers by turning them into pictures
The Major system is over three hundred years old and underlies almost every feat of memory involving numbers. The idea is simple: every digit gets a consonant sound, two sounds make a word, and a word is something you can picture. 14 becomes the door — and a picture stays where a string of digits falls apart.

What it is good for
- Every number that slips away
- PIN, phone number, house number, year, platform number. The code is the same whether it is four digits or forty — it grows with the number instead of failing at it.
- A hundred words, once
- You learn the table one time. After that every pair from 00 to 99 has its fixed picture and you never search for one again — that is the difference between a trick and a system.
- It does not stand alone
- Pictures on their own fade. What memoπ adds is recall instead of rereading, and reviews shortly before forgetting — every rule with its study on the method section.
The two tables to look things up in
The whole system is two lists, and both are open here:
- The basic code
- Ten mappings: which sound belongs to which digit, each with its memory hook. Learned in a few minutes — and the part that carries across languages.
- The image words
- A hundred words for the pairs 00 to 99, most of them with a drawn memory image. That is the table you learn in the practice field.
The best way in is to begin
The first image word sits within a minute, and from there you can tell for yourself whether the method carries. memoπ plans the reviews — ten minutes, an hour, a day, and onwards.
