Privacy Policy
As of 19 August 2026 · This policy covers the website memopi.app and the memoπ iOS app. Sections 2 to 4 describe the website, section 5 the app; sections 1, 6 and 7 apply to both. This is an English translation provided for convenience — the German version is the authoritative one.
1. Controller
Bittner + Thranberend GmbH
Schennershagen 9
32105 Bad Salzuflen, Germany
Represented by the managing directors: Dr. Johannes Bittner, Timo Thranberend

No data protection officer has been appointed; the requirements of § 38 BDSG are not met.
2. The principle: your data stays in your browser
memoπ stores data exclusively in your browser (localStorage). We do not collect, receive or process this data and have no access to it. There is no user account and no transmission of your data to us or to third parties.
Two things are stored:
- Your progress: learned blocks, the level and next review date of each block, your best run and the number of recalls.
- A log of your recalls: for every single recall, the time, the digit block, the mode (learning, review, test run), whether the recall was correct, how long you took and where an error occurred. It serves to check and improve the learning method. The log does not grow without bound: after 10,000 entries the oldest fall out.
Both stay in your browser. They leave your device only when you initiate it yourself — for example to carry your progress into the iOS app. Even then, nothing passes through a server of ours.
3. No cookies, no tracking
This website embeds no external services: no web analytics, no advertising networks, no social media plugins, no fonts or scripts from third-party servers. No cookies are set, which is why no cookie banner appears.
4. Server logs and hosting
When pages are retrieved, our hosting provider processes technically necessary server log data (including IP address, time, requested file, browser type). The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in secure and undisturbed operation. The log data is kept only as long as required for operation, security and error analysis, and is then deleted; we do not combine it with other data.
The hosting provider is united-domains GmbH, Gautinger Straße 10, 82319 Starnberg, Germany. We have concluded a data processing agreement with them pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR.
5. The memoπ iOS app
The same principle applies to the app as to the website — except that the data does not live in the browser but on your device. The app collects no data: no user account, no tracking, no analytics or crash reporting services, no third-party components and no network access by the app itself. We do not learn whether, when or how you use it.
The same two things are stored as on the web — your progress and the log of your recalls (section 2) — plus your settings such as reminder times and appearance. Everything lives in the app's protected storage area on the device. The log stays there too: it is neither transmitted nor evaluated by us.
- Device backup: your progress travels with your iPhone's ordinary backup — depending on your setup, into your iCloud or onto your computer. That backup is yours or Apple's; we have no access to it.
- Notifications: reminders for due reviews are scheduled and triggered on the device; there is no push service and no server of ours. The app only asks for this permission if you switch reminders on, and you can revoke it at any time in the iOS Settings. It is the only permission the app requests at all; it does not touch camera, location or contacts.
- One-time purchase: Apple handles the purchase of the full version. The app only learns whether it is unlocked; we never see payment, account or billing data. Apple is responsible for processing the purchase, and from Apple we receive only aggregated sales statistics without any personal reference.
- Importing progress from the web: if you transfer your progress from memopi.app into the app, the data goes directly from your browser to your device — via the clipboard, a file or a direct link. Nothing passes through our servers; with the direct link, the data sits in the fragment of the address, and a fragment never reaches a server.
Deleting: in the app under Settings via "Delete progress", or by deleting the app. That removes your progress from the device. It remains in an already existing device backup until that backup is overwritten or deleted.
6. Your rights and your control over your data
Since your progress lives only in your browser or on your device, you have full control:
- Deleting: in the web app via "Fortschritt löschen" (delete progress) in the settings, or by clearing the site data in your browser; in the iOS app as described in section 5.
- Taking it with you: under "Lernstand übertragen" (transfer progress) you can copy your progress including its log, save it as a file, or hand it directly to the iOS app. The data goes straight from your browser to wherever you put it — nothing passes through our servers. As long as you do not do this, no copy exists outside your browser.
Beyond that, you have the data subject rights of the GDPR: access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21 GDPR). You can reach us at support@memopi.app. Since your data lives exclusively in your browser or on your device, we generally hold no personal data about you.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The authority responsible for us is the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information of North Rhine-Westphalia (LDI NRW).
7. Changes to this policy
We adapt this policy when the website or the app changes. The current version is available at memopi.app/en/privacy, the authoritative German version at memopi.app/datenschutz.
